Sri Lankan navy detains 12 Indian fishermen

MADURAI: The Sri Lankan navy detained 12 Indian fishermen on Monday evening for poaching in the territorial waters of the island nation.
The fishermen sailed from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on Monday morning.
According to Sri Lankan navy website, naval personnel onboard a fast attack craft and the SLNS Ranawickrama attached to the Northern Naval Command on routine patrol detained 12 Indian fishermen and their two trawlers while they were fishing around two nautical miles off the Kachchativu on Monday evening.
The arrested fishermen were brought to the naval base SLNS Uththara in Kankesanthurai. The trawlers and the fishing gear were taken to the SLNS Elara in Kareinagar.
The 12 Indian fishermen were handed over to the assistant director of fisheries in Jaffna for onward legal action.
U Arulanandam of the Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen said the arrested fishermen were produced before a court in Kytes on Tuesday. The court remanded them in judicial custody till September 26. They were lodged in a Jaffna prison.
With the arrest of these fishermen, the number of fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has touched 20.
